A filling repairs a cavity or a small chip. We remove the decayed part of the tooth and restore it with a tooth-colored composite that blends in. One visit, usually 30 to 45 minutes per tooth, and we use white fillings only.
What a filling is
A cavity is a small area of tooth that bacteria have softened. A filling removes that area and replaces it with composite resin bonded to the tooth, sealing it against further decay.
Small cavities caught early mean smaller fillings and more of your natural tooth kept. That is why we recommend a checkup every six months.
What to expect
One visit. Dr. Kim numbs the area first; most patients feel pressure but no pain. You can eat as soon as the numbness wears off.
1. The cavity is found
Usually at a checkup or on an X-ray, often before it hurts.
2. Numbing
A small amount of local anesthetic; the pinch of the shot is the only part you feel.
3. Decay removed
Only the softened part of the tooth is removed, keeping as much healthy tooth as possible.
4. Tooth prepared
The surface is cleaned and treated so the composite bonds firmly.
5. Composite placed
Tooth-colored material is placed in layers and shaped to match the tooth.
6. Hardened and polished
The filling is set with a light, the bite is checked, and it is polished smooth.
Cost and insurance
Fillings are covered by most dental plans, including Denti-Cal (Medi-Cal Dental). We check your benefits and tell you any cost before we start.
Monthly payment plans are available through CareCredit, Cherry and Sunbit, subject to credit approval. We give you a written estimate before any treatment.
Dr. Kim's approach
Less is more. Dr. Kim removes only the decayed part and keeps the healthy tooth, and chooses the composite shade so the filling disappears into the tooth.
We do not use silver (amalgam) fillings.
